Il 14 marzo parteciperà alla Camera dei Deputati all'incontro " Il valore dell'Europa. Crescita, occupazione e diritti ".
In una recente conferenza presso l'Istituto per i Diritti umani presso la facolta' di giurisprudenza dell' University College di London su “ Protezione dei rifugiati, immigrazione e Diritti umani in Europa” il Commissario ha fatto appello agli Stati dell'Unione europea di non rimandare i rifugiati siriani nei paesi dell'Unione i cui sistemi di accoglienza non funzionano, in particolare in Bulgaria, Grecia, Italia e Malta.
Solo qualche settimana fa la Corte suprema inglese aveva affermato che il rimpatrio di una persona da un paese del Consiglio europeo ad un altro e' contrario alla Convenzione europea per i Diritti dell'Uomo “ quando sussistono fondati motivi per ritenere che la persona interessata ... affronta un rischio reale [nel paese in cui lui o lei deve essere rimosso] di essere sottoposto a [trattamenti contrari all'articolo 3 della Convenzione]. "Il caso riguarda alcuni richiedenti asilo che chiedono di no essere rimandati in Italia in forza del regolamento Dublino.
ASGI (Associazione per gli Studi Giuridici sull'immigrazione) attraverso l'avv. Loredana Leo dall'Italia ha contribuito attivamente, fornendo ai richiedenti asilo in Gran Bretagna documenti utili a provare che le condizioni del Sistema Asilo in Italia sono critiche, cosi' come esposto in una relazione del 2012 sugli "Aspetti critici del sistema di protezione internazionale in Italia" .
“Abbiamo descritto al Commissario europeo le difficoltà che devono affrontare i migranti per chiedere asilo in Italia e come cerchiamo di migliorare la situazione attraverso le nostre azioni di advocacy verso le autorità politiche italiane e i nostri progetti" afferma Loredana Leo.
“ASGI sta avviando un nuovo progetto per monitorare il sistema italiano di protezione internazionale , grazie ad un finanziamento di Open Society Foundation.” continua. Nel progetto è previsto la diffusione ad altri legali in Europa delle informazioni raccolte sulla situazione italiana, attraverso l'aggiornamento del rapporto sulle condizioni critiche del sistema asilo e la creazione di un database on line con giurisprudenza e materiali.
"Vogliamo spingere le autorità a prendere immediatamente misure per migliorare le condizioni di degradanti in cui sono costretti i richiedenti asilo nei paesi europei, al fine di assicurare più rispetto per i diritti delle persone bisognose di protezione internazionale". conclude Loredana Leo.

Nils Muižnieks, Commissioner for Human Rights of the European Council, will be in Italy 12 to 14 March 2014, to meet Italian authorities and NGOs and discuss about human rights .
In a recent Lecture hosted by the Institute for Human Rights, University College London Faculty of Laws on “Refugee Protection, Migration and Human Rights in Europe”, the Commissioner urged “EU member states to refrain from using the “Dublin Regulation” for returning Syrian refugees to other European countries whose asylum systems are already overstretched or highly dysfunctional, in particular Bulgaria, Greece, Italy and Malta.”
Some weeks ago even the UK Supreme Court stated that the removal of a person from a member state of the Council of Europe to another country was contrary to the ECHR “where substantial grounds have been shown for believing that the person concerned… faces a real risk [in the country to which he or she is to be removed] of being subjected to [treatment contrary to article 3 of the Convention].” The case involves asylum seekers in UK who are resisting their return to Italy.
ASGI 's attorney Loredana Leo from Italy contributed to the decision actively and supported the asylum seekers [involved in the case] with documents proving that the asylum system in Italy is in a critical situation.
ASGI, with its long-standing commitment for the protection of refugees, participated in the trial by providing the asylum seekers’ lawyers with a report collecting the “critical aspects of the international protection system in Italy”(2012).
“We describe to the European Commissioner for Human Rights the difficulties that migrants are forced to struggle with in Italy to ask for asylum and how we are trying to ensure better asylum system, more respectful about human rights, with our advocacy action toward italian authorities and our projects” says Loredana Leo . ASGI, is managing a new project on monitoring the Italian international protection system on behalf of thanks to Open Society Foundations’ financial support. The project includes getting in contact with other human rights' attorneys around Europe, constant updating of the 2012 report and the creation of a web space to host updates and debates on this case law.
“We want to push authorities to immediately take steps to improve the despicable conditions in which are forced asylum seekers in European countries, in order to ensure more respect for the rights of people in need of international protection.” hopes Loredana Leo.
